Who is 'Toucan Bob?'

The toucan is our mascot, of course, and BOB stands for Battle of the Books! So we kind of think Toucan Bob is the mascot for Edison's Battle of the Books. Besides, Toucan Bob loves to read!

What is this web site?

This is a wiki – a web page you can help create. You can add information, talk about the books, ask questions and more! You can even add recordings (podcasts), pictures, and artwork.

How can I join?

If you'd like to be a member of this page (so you can help edit it and join our discussions), please ask your parents, read our rules, then give us your name and grade. This wiki is currently only for students at Edison Elementary in Eugene, OR. Others can read it, but not change it.

Once you join, you can sign in and add information to any book's page. If you want to ask questions (either because you don't know the answer or you want to challenge others!), please add to the Huge List of Questions. Or post a comment using the "discussion post link" on the upper righthand side of most of these web pages (it's next to the EDIT button).

What are the rules?

We have rules about being safe online and about working well as a group. You need to agree to these rules in order to participate.
  1. You need your parents' permission to participate.
  2. If you edit our pages, you need to be respectful (of course!). Don't erase other people's work. Don't make fun of other people's work, their questions, etc. No put downs, etc. – you get it, right?
  3. Please make your additions to Toucanbob relevant and worth reading. Toucanbob is not a place for writing non-sensible blather.
  4. Students' last names may NOT appear on the web site, even in your user name.
  5. Please sign your work (with your first name only!)
  6. Students who don't follow the rules will get one reminder. After that, if someone continues to break the rules, we may remove them from the list of users so this can stay a fun and helpful place.
Do you have other ideas for helpful rules? Let us know!

What is Oregon Battle of the Books?

"The Oregon Battle of the Books , OBOB, is a statewide voluntary reading motivation and comprehension program sponsored by the Oregon Association of School Libraries in conjunction with a Library Services and Technology Act grant. Students in 3rd-12th grade, regardless of ability, are exposed to quality literature representing a variety of literary styles and viewpoints. The mission is to encourage and recognize students who enjoy reading, to broaden reading interests, to increase reading comprehension, promote academic excellence, and to promote cooperative learning and teamwork among students."
We at Edison Elementary are participating in the OBOB for 2012-2013. If you don't already have a copy, here's the registration form. Register with your teacher by October 31, 2012!
