These are a similar, but less complicated version of the official battle rules.

There will be as many questions as time allows. In Which Book (IWB) and In The Book Questions (ITB) are randomly ordered.

Each team will have one spokesperson throughout a battle. Only answers from the spokesperson will be accepted.

Two teams will compete during a single battle. The team to the Moderator’s left will go first and get all odd-numbered questions. The team to the Moderator’s right will go second and get all even-numbered questions.

Once the question is asked, the team gets 15 seconds to quietly discuss the question amongst themselves. Only the first answer the spokesperson gives will be accepted. All discussion must stop once 15 seconds is up, and the question must be answered immediately. If the spokesperson doesn’t answer immediately, or discussion continues, the Moderator will give the question to the other team. We will go easy on this rule during the mock battles, but will strictly adhere to it for the real battles!

During a battle, a team’s spokesperson may request a repeat of a question. All repeats must take place within the 15 sec time limit, which starts after the question is read for the first time.

If a question is incorrectly answered, or only a partially correct answer is given, the question passes to the other team and they are given another 15 seconds to discuss and then answer. Thus, the acquiring team is able to score on the question passed to them.

Regardless of who scored on the previous question, even-numbered questions are first given to the team on the Moderator’s right; odd-numbered questions are first given to the team on the Moderator’s left. This means that an acquiring team may get to answer 2 questions in a row--the one it acquired, followed by their own.

In Which Book questions are worth 5 points. If either the correct title, or the correct author is answered, the team scores 3 points. The part of the answer that is correct is revealed, and the question is passed on to the other team. If the other team correctly gives the rest of the answer, they score 2 points. If the other team does not answer correctly, the question does not pass back to the originally-asked team. The Moderator always gives the correct answer if it has not been answered by either team.

In The Book questions are worth 5 points for a complete answer. Designated two-part questions are scored with 3 points for the first correct answer and 2 points for the second correct answer. If only one part of the answer is given, the team scores 3 points.

An answer is considered correct even if mispronounced, as long as the Judge/Moderator can discern it.

Teams may not use any books or notes.

Practice good sportsmanship; always treat your teammates, other teams and the officials respectfully.

After a battle, congratulate your opponents on a good battle.
